formation-anthony-girard-coups-de-vents

Following on from its first International Orchestration Competition and before the next one (scheduled for 2025), Coups de Vents is devoting its 2023-2024 residency to orchestration. For the occasion, we are inviting a prolific and talented composer to the Hauts-de-France region: Anthony Girard.
On the programme: sessions to discover the artist’s vast repertoire, and a fascinating training course in orchestration.
Follow the guide

Discovering Anthony Girard’s repertoire

Contemporary, rich and suitable for all types of wind ensemble, Anthony Girard’s repertoire is fascinating! For wind band or orchestra with soloist: a selection of seven works by the artist will be offered to local music groups.

Participating orchestras will have the chance to work on their chosen piece with Anthony Girard himself, and benefit from his advice.

They will then have the opportunity to present the fruits of their labours in public concerts across the region.

Works for solo orchestra :

  • Gaïa, for wind band (2006)
  • Avec des ailes d’or, for wind band (2012)
  • Hymne des plaines d’ailleurs (level 3/4)
  • 3 miniatures (level 3/4)

Works for orchestra with soloists:

  • Le tournoiement des songes, concerto for trumpet and wind band
  • Au-devant du soleil, for euphonium or saxhorn and wind band
  • Spirales, concerto for saxophone and wind band

Orchestration training for wind ensembles: from chamber orchestras to large wind ensembles.

Conductors and orchestra managers sometimes face difficulties in bringing our wind bands, a jewel in the crown of the region’s cultural heritage, to life: variations in numbers, fluctuations in level, shortages of certain instruments, etc. Knowing how to adapt the existing repertoire to these situations is therefore a real challenge, both for them and for the future of our orchestras.

This is the very real need that this orchestration training course, led by Anthony Girard, sets out to meet. Open to composers and conductors of all levels, it will be spread over 10 sessions, two per month (one face-to-face, one by video), starting on 30 September 2023.

The two levels of training :

  • Initiation

Arrangements for various wind ensembles

  • Improvement and preparation for the 2nd IOC in 2025

Orchestrations for harmony based on an original work for piano, with reference to the 1st International Orchestration Competition 2022. Different styles will be studied.

First dates to remember:

  • 30 September 2023
  • 14 October 2023
  • 18 November 2023 (optional)
  • 2nd December 2023
  • 13th January 2024

The face-to-face training sessions will be held at the Calonne-Ricouart music school (possibility of rotation with other venues, to be decided in consultation with the trainees). The distance learning sessions will be scheduled during the first session in Calonne-Ricouart in consultation with the trainees.

It’s also good to know that this course is entirely free of charge and paid for by Coups de Vents and its partners
